Artefact Design is an interpretive design studio.

Our staff and collaborative colleagues are design, information, technical, and education professionals. We provide planning and design services for environmental graphics, exhibits, graphic design, and user interface design.

We are committed to bringing a thoughtful, integrated and engaging experience to every project. We use our skills and our extensive experience working with museums, aquariums, public agencies, and private industry, to find new solutions to the challenges which arise in the design and development of public communication.

Tanya Symons Bredehoft is the principal of Artefact Design. She is a designer with 15 years in the interpretive design business. George Spicer Bredehoft is an artist. He provides Artefact with behind-the-scenes Macintosh software and hardware support as well as Photoshop and QuickTime expertise. Tanya and George have a very small worm ranch in their front yard.

Artefact Design is based in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, a small community in coastal north county San Diego, California.

What are the basic uses for content on this site?

View them, download them, enjoy them, and post them - UNMODIFIED - to your own site as long as the images are indeed unmodified, are linked to the home page of our site, are properly credited to us, and include the proper copyright info.

Please do not directly link a tag on your site to an image or page as the address is likely to change.

Why are there limits on the use of these images and words?

A good question and the answer to which is found in the balancing of multiple issues.

First is that we want to share our work with prospective clients as well as any others who may appreciate it.

Second is that we have spent our lives-to-date learning how to create these works. Creating images and words - conveying thoughts and ideas - is our livelyhood.

Third is that we feel it is less-than-fair for people to take shortcuts at other's expense and/or to claim credit for that which is not theirs. See point two.

Fourth is that if we do not make an effort to protect the rights to what we have created, we will have, by the lack of such action, diminished the right to call our creations ours.

Fifth is, just like everyone else in the world, we need to eat and a place to live. These works are central to our generating an income. If someone takes them, calls them their own, and/or uses them in a fashion other than what is allowed in the licences we grant, that someone is jeopardizing our livelihood and is therefore endangering our lives.

What will we do to protect our copyright?

Protecting our works starts with establishing the limited licenses for their use. These licenses set what we believe to be reasonable and reasonably enforceable usage guidelines.

In terms of determining what is a non-licensed use...

As an example, since we do not license the vast majority of our work for other's content-creation purposes, when an image of ours shows up in, or as part of, someone's work, it is rather easy to deem the use as being non-licensed.

For details of the limited licenses, click here..

It is our hope and intention, that with these reasonable guidelines, which are easy to abide, people will treat us reasonably and not steal our livelihood.

The far shorter answer is... we will do whatever it takes.

:-)
